Arinaga
I really like Arinaga. I'm not even sure I should be telling you about it, because I'm not that keen on sharing it. The roads there, which lead from the Motorway are distinctly uninspiring. They lead through a huge industrial estate, alongside the biggest wind farms I've ever seen. You wouldn't ever imagine there was anything much to see at the other end.
But there is.
Arinaga is great. The town seems prosperous and busy, with no concessions whatsoever to the tourist trade. The long, gently curving beach and seafront are completely undeveloped, with a few restaurants, bars and shops for the locals along side. We were greeted warmly by the bar owners; they're obviously perfectly happy to see tourists, but don't go out of their way to advertise themselves.
This is a place to visit for a meal, a stroll and a drink. And to get the feel of a real Canarian town.
