This lake looks idyllic doesn't it?
It separates Maspalomas from its rather brasher neighbour, Playa del Ingles. What you may not be able to read on the sign in the photograph is the MOSQUITO warning. The lake is a reclaimed area of marsh land, as is the surrounding land, with its purpose built holiday accommodation. The mosquitoes have not moved out yet! The idea is, that the fish in the lake will eventually gobble up all the mosquitoes, so getting rid of a pesky problem. But it hasn't happened yet. You have been warned.

Maspalomas, close to Playa del Ingles on the southern tip of Gran Canaria, is probably most famous for its beautiful sand dunes. These really are vast and at first sight seem quite empty, until you realise that everywhere, nestled in the dips between the dunes are small groups of holiday makers, topping up their tans.

Maspalomas is slightly quieter than Playa del Ingles and more upmarket. The dunes are backed by a busy resort. with some huge, luxurious hotels and many clubs, bars, restaurants and shopping centres. There is a large water park here and nearby, you van find golf courses and theme parks. There is a nudist beach here too.

Maspalomas is popular with the gay scene and has a Gay Pride festival in May which is now world famous.

One of the largest shopping centres is Faro 2, which is a massive, multi level complex close to the beach, full of designer stores and boutiques. From here, it is just a short distance to Playa del Ingles with many more opportunities for shopping and a lively night life, including the famous Yumbo Centre which caters for the gay scene.

There is plenty to do in the area around Maspalomas, from camel rides and jeep safaris to para gliding and dolphin spotting.
