The Cathedral at Arucas is quite possibly the most striking building on the entire island of Gran Canaria. About a 20 minute drive west of Las Palmas, Arucas is a city of around 34,000 people, located within an area of beautiful valleys and mountains.
Made entirely from local stone and elaborately decorated, the city cathedral is officially known as the Church of San Juan Bautista and dates back to 1909. The city as a whole is certainly worth visiting and is particularly well known for its rum production; picking up a bottle of the local spirit is almost an unofficial tradition! There is also a spectacular botanical garden in Arucas with more than 500 species of plant. A great spot for a day trip.
