This intriguing sight is the interior of the Cuatro Puertas Caves. Just inland from the east coast of the island, and very close to the airport, these caves are found on the side of a small mountain and are an important historical landmark due to their association with the Guanche people; the original inhabitants of Gran Canaria.
Cuatro Puertas means Ôfour doorsÕ and these openings lead into one large room. It is believed this was an important meeting place and ceremonial ground thousands of years ago and now sees many tourist visitors each year. Easy to reach from both the north and south coast, the caves certainly make for a nice change from the beach.
