If a view such as this is not worth a pair of aching legs, I don't know what is. From the Pico de las Nieves it is possible to see a large part of the island, as well as all the way to Mount Teide, the highest point on neighbouring Tenerife.
Not being a very large island, wherever you are staying on the coast should not be any more than around an hour or so drive away from here.
If you feel like a break from the beach, this is certainly one of the best possible things you could do on Gran Canaria and will give you a great sense of accomplishment when you reach the top.
