The Clergy of the Canary Islands agreed in September 1699 on the opening of a well in which to store snow. In the winters in which snow was abundant, it was pressed together with straw and placed at the bottom of the well. When summer came, the snow was transported to Las Palmas (by pack animals) the snow was then available in a store called ' La Neveria ' located behind the Cathedral.
This exploitation of a natural resource was then expanded, by the addition of a second well, which is now hidden under military installations. In 1866 the wells were sold to two of San Mateos' inhabitants. The snow was continually exploited until the beginning of the 20th century. .
Due to this history, the highest point in Gran Canaria is called 'Pico de los Pozos de la Nieve', this point can be seen from here and has an altitude of 1,949 metres. The point of rock piercing the clouds is 'Roque Nublo'
