Chapter 255
Chapter 255
"Exaggerated? Not at all." Shen Changsheng looked back at the carriage and said, "In the eyes of the county magistrate, everything can be sold and everything has a price."
"Is he so short of money?" Huang Zhongchang asked puzzledly.
"Who has a grudge against money?" Shen Hui'e looked at him with her inky black eyes and said, "No one would complain about having too much money."
Huang Zhongchang pondered for a moment after hearing this and said, "Then his mansion must be filled with mountains of gold and silver."
"Considering how greedy he is, he must have made a lot of money." Shen Changsheng said as he flicked the whip lightly. The whip did not hit the horse because he was reluctant to do so.
"Oh!" Huang Zhongchang rubbed his hands excitedly.
"Do you like gold so much?" Shen Hui'e looked at him with amusement.
"Of course, who has a grudge against gold? It's loved by everyone." Huang Zhongchang said to her with his bright black eyes.
Using her words to block her, Shen Hui'e shook her head and laughed when she heard it.
"Now we can distribute food and wages." Huang Zhongchang looked at her with his dark eyes and said.
"Haven't you received your salary yet?" Shen Hui'e said to him with raised eyebrows.
"Not yet!" Huang Zhongchang shook his head slightly and said, "I dare not move now." He said honestly, "Although the money you gave is a lot, one cent is not much." Then he added, "If we take over Hezhong Prefecture this time, I will give it all together."
"Okay!" Shen Hui'e had no choice but to say, "Maintaining an army is like raising a money-eating beast. It costs money like water. It costs money to eat, drink, defecate and urinate."
"Haha..." Huang Zhongchang smiled and said, "Then rob! I don't feel guilty about robbing the county magistrate."
Shen Hui'e shook her head and laughed, "It's not enough to just rob silver, we need more food and grass."
"Of course. Let's occupy the granary first." Huang Zhongchang nodded hurriedly.
"We're here!" Shen Changsheng said, looking at the low city wall in front of him, and opened the carriage door!
"This city wall is quite low." Shen Hui'e said as she looked at the rammed earth wall.
"It's better than nothing!" Shen Changsheng jumped off the cart and pulled the horse towards the city. "The city wall of our county is not high either."
Shen Hui'e looked at the soldiers guarding the city gate and said, "These are organized by themselves!"
"How did you know?" Shen Changsheng turned around and looked at her and asked, "They were wearing military uniforms."
"It doesn't fit." Shen Hui'e looked the guard up and down and said, "He looks kind to the common people, not fierce or ferocious."
"That's true. In the past, the guards were very fierce when entering the city, and we had to pay tolls." Shen Changsheng snorted.
"Aren't you collecting it now?" Shen Hui'e asked curiously.
"No, we don't charge a single copper coin now." Shen Changsheng said happily, driving the carriage smoothly into the city, and said as he walked, "Now these small counties are all managing themselves."
"Wow..." Shen Hui'e was surprised, "Each one is more daring than the other!"
"It's all our pattern." Shen Changsheng said with a smile on his face, "Organize people and patrol day and night." He smiled and said, "Look, the wheat seedlings in the field are growing very well."
Shen Hui'e rubbed her scarf with her index finger, "We common people are the most docile. As long as we can survive, we will never rebel."
"I feel it." Huang Zhongchang said with emotion, "Why did we flee? Because we couldn't bear it any longer."
"I'm glad you're back." Shen Changsheng jumped down from the shaft of the cart and said, "Get off! We'll stay here today."
"How about this shop?" Shen Hui'e jumped off the carriage with her bag on her back.
"It's quite clean, without lice or fleas. We stayed here all the time when we went to Hezhong Prefecture." Shen Changsheng held the reins and looked at her and said, "There are single rooms and a large bunk bed here." He smiled and said, "Let's take two single rooms."
"Uh... okay." Shen Hui'e responded after hesitating for a moment.
"I'll go and store the carriage first." Shen Changsheng looked at them tenderly and said, "There's a fire bed in the room, so you won't feel cold when you sleep at night."
"Yeah!" Shen Hui'e nodded with a smile.
"Come in quickly! It's cold outside." Shen Changsheng looked at them gently and said in a loud voice, "Waiter, waiter."
"Hey! I'm here." The waiter pushed aside the curtain and came out quickly, "Hey! Master Shen, why are you here? Please come in, please come in."
Seeing this level of familiarity, Shen Hui'e was all smiles, they were now familiar with each other.
"Who are you two?" the waiter asked enthusiastically as he looked at Shen Hui'e who was standing in front of the carriage.
"My sister and brother-in-law." Shen Changsheng introduced with a smile, "Hurry up and show them to their room. It's cold outside."
"Okay," the waiter responded crisply, holding up the curtain and bowing slightly, "You two, please come in!"
Shen Hui'e entered the inn. It was broad daylight so the light was still good because there was a brazier.
After getting a room number at the counter, the waiter led them to a single room.
There was a flash of surprise in Shen Hui'e's eyes, "It's quite warm."
"This is the idea of the butcher lady. It will be much warmer in winter." The waiter said quickly, "Don't worry about the fire. We will keep adding more to ensure that the bed is always warm."
"Thank you!" Shen Hui'e took off her scarf and said with a smile.
"No thanks, no thanks." The waiter looked at her with a red face.
"Cough cough..." Huang Zhongchang coughed twice upon seeing this.
"What would you two like to eat?" the waiter asked hurriedly, looking embarrassed.
"Let's talk about it after my elder brother comes." Shen Hui'e looked at him with a smile on her face.
"Okay!" the waiter responded with a smile and then stepped back.
Shen Hui'e leaned over and sat on the edge of the kang, took off her gloves, and touched the kang, "It's really warm." She looked around and saw the familiar ceiling, and smiled.
Huang Zhongchang sat down and looked at her across the wooden table, staring at her without blinking.
Is she that pretty? Don't you think so?
It was hard to ignore this gaze. Shen Hui'e fixed her eyes on him and said, "Why are you looking at me? Is there anything wrong with that?"
"Didn't you see that the waiter was blushing?" Huang Zhongchang said, staring at her with his dark eyes without blinking.
Shen Hui'e was stunned when she heard that. She blinked and looked at him and said, "Maybe you rarely get thanked by others!" She took off her dog-skin hat and said, "That's why I feel embarrassed." Her eyes moved and she said, "What's so good about me compared to a young and beautiful woman like that?"
"No..." Huang Zhongchang realized what he had said and his pupils shrank slightly.
"What did you say?" Shen Hui'e looked at him puzzledly and said, "Nothing?"
"Nothing?" Huang Zhongchang said in a panic, "Your reputation as a butcher is quite famous."
Shen Hui'e smiled brightly and said, "If you do anything good for the common people, they will remember you."
Huang Zhongchang blinked his dark eyes when he heard this and said, "Is it just such a small matter?" He said with disapproval in his tone.
"I don't believe it!" Shen Hui'e raised her eyebrows and looked at him and said, "Those who were carried into the shrine all did things that benefited the country and the people, such as Dayu controlling floods and Shennong tasting hundreds of herbs."
Huang Zhongchang pursed his lips and looked at her unwillingly and said, "Your affairs are insignificant."
"I didn't say it was something as great as being a saint!" Shen Hui'e looked at him with amusement and said, "What I meant was that I wanted to cultivate to become an immortal! Either find a place deep in the mountains to cultivate, absorbing the essence of the sun and the moon, or serve the country and the people with all my heart and soul until my death, and be remembered by the people for generations to come."
"You really remind me all the time. Don't worry, I'm not interested in cultivating immortality or living forever." Huang Zhongchang looked at her with amusement and said, "My life is tiring enough, and here comes..." He shook his head vigorously.
"This state of mind changes with time. Not wanting it now doesn't mean you won't want it in the future." Shen Hui'e looked at him with her ink-black eyes and said.
Huang Zhongchang smacked his lips when he heard this, looked at her with a frank look and said, "Maybe! Anyway, not now."
"I'm coming in!" Shen Changsheng stood outside the door and shouted towards the inside.
"Come in quickly." Shen Hui'e said, looking back at the door.
Shen Changsheng pushed the door open and asked, "What do we want to eat?"
"I don't quite understand this. Let you make the decision, brother!" Shen Hui'e said to him with her bright eyes.
"Make some corn porridge, steam the dry food we brought, and stir-fry some mung bean sprouts!" Shen Changsheng said to them with his dark eyes.
"Just listen to my brother-in-law." Huang Zhongchang responded readily, "There's nothing to choose from in winter."
"Okay, I'll ask the waiter to prepare us a meal so we can rest early after eating. It's getting late and we have to travel early tomorrow morning." Shen Changsheng said naggingly and turned to leave the room.
A bowl of corn porridge, two steamed buns I brought with me, and a plate of stir-fried bean sprouts make a complete meal.
"This steamed bun is good. After being steamed, it is soft and fluffy, and is very suitable as dry food." Shen Changsheng swallowed the steamed bun in his mouth and said, "Is it suitable as military rations?"
"It's winter now. It won't work in summer. It will go bad in a few days." Shen Hui'e shook her head slightly when she heard this. The bean sprouts were not only salty, but also had no oil at all. They were simply boiled in water.
"The army can't afford these white flour buns every day." Huang Zhongchang paused with his chopsticks holding bean sprouts, looked up at him and said.
"Then how do we solve the problem of military rations?" Shen Changsheng said with a worried look on his face.
"We really don't know about this." Huang Zhongchang swallowed the bean sprouts in his mouth and shook his head slightly.
"Just ask anyone who has served in the military and you'll know." Shen Hui'e said very straightforwardly.
"The food isn't that good anyway." Huang Zhongchang thought for a moment and said, "Generals are another matter, but ordinary soldiers are lucky to have enough to eat."
"Let's not talk about this anymore." Shen Hui'e said, pointing to the food on the table.
"Ok!"
After a simple meal, the waiter took away the dishes and chopsticks on the kang table, wiped it clean with a rag, and then left.
Shen Changsheng stood up and looked at them and said, "You guys should get some rest!" He smiled and said, "I'm next door." He walked to the door and turned back and said, "I snore a little loudly tonight, don't make a fuss!"
"Ah?" Shen Hui'e looked at him in confusion. Why was he talking about this?
"No, even thunder can't wake me up." Huang Zhongchang looked at him gently and said tolerantly.
"I'm leaving." Shen Changsheng lifted the curtain and left the room.
