Chapter 122 Hidden Crisis
Chapter 122 Hidden Crisis
At night in the camp, a cool breeze blew through the curtains, bringing a post-battle tranquility. Though the soldiers had settled in, each one's face was still filled with fatigue and vigilance. Cheng Yuwei gently took Ling Xiaotian's hand, gazing at his face with worry in her eyes.
"Ling Xiaotian, you must be careful. The forces behind 'Shadow' are far more complicated than we imagined." She said softly, with a hint of undisguised worry in her tone.
Ling Xiaotian held her hand tightly, a look of determination on his face. "I know, but we can't retreat. Only by facing them head-on can we protect this land and you."
The moment their eyes met, a silent understanding filled the air. Cheng Yuwei slowly leaned on his shoulder, feeling his strong and steady heartbeat, as if providing her with endless strength.
"The camp has been feeling restless lately." Zhou Hao walked in, breaking the brief silence. His face was grave, and he whispered, "Today's raid wasn't just a test. I'm worried there might be spies hiding among us."
Ling Xiaotian's eyes grew fierce upon hearing this. "Do you have anyone you suspect?" he asked in a low voice.
"It's not certain yet, but we need to be cautious." Zhou Hao handed over a list with the names of some soldiers and officials who had behaved suspiciously recently.
Cheng Yuwei looked at the list, a chill running down her spine. "A traitor..." she whispered, her brow furrowed slightly. In war, betrayal from within is more terrifying than any enemy force.
The next day, Ling Xiaotian convened a secret meeting in the main tent. The camp's main generals and several trusted soldiers were all present, each with a solemn expression, holding their breath, awaiting the commander-in-chief's instructions.
"From today on, we will strengthen our internal review." Ling Xiaotian's voice was as steady as a rock, carrying an unshakable majesty. "Anyone found to be collaborating with the enemy will be killed without mercy."
After a period of silence, Zhou Hao began to arrange a specific review plan and would be responsible for the inspection and supervision of each camp.
Cheng Yuwei paced the camp, observing the soldiers' expressions and movements. Though not a military commander, she was renowned for her intelligence and attentiveness, often picking up on details others missed. Just then, she noticed a soldier's gaze wander, and something clutched in his hand seemed to flash with a silver gleam.
She took a few steps forward, pretending to tidy up the corners of the tent, while quietly listening to his movements. The soldier suddenly took a step back, looking a little panicked. Cheng Yuwei's heart moved, and just as she was about to approach, she heard Zhou Hao's voice from behind: "Madam, what are you doing here?"
The soldier immediately looked back as if awakened, then hurried away. Cheng Yuwei's face changed slightly, and she pulled Zhou Hao aside: "Check the background of that man just now."
Zhou Hao nodded, a hint of approval in his eyes. He knew Cheng Yuwei was a meticulous person, and if she had any doubts, they would definitely not be groundless.
As night fell, Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei walked side by side at the edge of the camp. The stars shone brightly, their shadows elongated by the moonlight, reflected on the dirt and rocks.
"Yuwei, are you worried about something?" Ling Xiaotian turned his head to look at her, his voice soft.
"I'm worried about your safety, and I'm also worried that there are too many enemies among us that have not yet been discovered." Cheng Yuwei sighed deeply, with a hint of sadness in her eyes.
Ling Xiaotian stopped, turned around, gently hugged her, and whispered, "No matter how deep the enemy hides, I will protect you."
Cheng Yuwei felt the firmness in his words, and her heart warmed. However, at this moment, a gust of wind blew past, and they heard a short and sharp bird call from afar.
Ling Xiaotian's expression instantly turned stern. "There's some unusual movement."
The shadow of battle once again loomed over them, and the unending crisis was quietly approaching.
