Chapter 403 The Governor's Family Banquet
Chapter 403 The Governor's Family Banquet
“I think Bai Xiaoyu is quite capable, and I plan to transfer her to the governor’s office.”
Si Chu's expression was calm, and his tone was as if he were talking about a trivial matter.
Upon hearing this, Yan Xue's face immediately darkened, and her tone was full of displeasure.
"Isn't the secretarial work with the governor always my responsibility?"
Although she disliked the governor's rigid way of doing things from the bottom of her heart, she knew better than anyone else that this secretary position was the best opportunity to get close to the governor, and she must not give it up easily.
"Haven't you had some family matters lately? Put work aside for now."
Si Chu spoke casually, but a hint of impatience was hidden in his eyes.
Yan Xue's work ability is really too average. She is not capable of handling the position of the governor's secretary at all, and he is always left to clean up after her.
These words acted like a fuse, instantly igniting Yan Xue's emotions. Her marriage was already on the verge of collapse, and now even her only source of support—her job—was about to be taken away, causing a surge of resentment to well up inside her.
Her eyes immediately welled up with tears, and she began to sob and wipe them away.
Jealous and flustered, she didn't forget to glare at "Bai Xiaoyu" and signal to her with her eyes that she should go out first.
Bai Xiaoyu tiptoed out of the door, but before she had gone far, she heard Yan Xue complaining in the office, her voice trembling with tears, that Liu Jinnian was determined to divorce her.
Immediately following was Si Chu's cold, hard voice: "What kind of behavior is this, crying and sobbing here? If your man doesn't want you, then find a way to keep him."
"How can I tie him up? He's determined to leave!"
Yan Xue's crying grew louder.
"Then have a child." Si Chu's tone was full of impatience, as if this was the only solution to everything.
Outside the door, "Bai Xiaoyu" curled her lips into a faint sneer, a hint of disdain hidden in her eyes. She quietly closed the office door, shutting out the crying and scheming inside.
Not long after, the transfer of "Bai Xiaoyu" was finalized.
She walked to the governor's office with the documents in her hand, and just as she was about to knock, a deep voice came from inside: "Come in."
Pushing open the door, the first thing you see is a man buried in piles of documents.
He was about fifty years old, and the years had etched fine lines on his face, and his temples were streaked with gray. He looked gentle yet tired.
But just as Bai Xiaoyu stepped across the threshold, the man suddenly raised his head. His eyes were sharp as a hawk, unwavering, and fixed on her, making her heart skip a beat.
"Governor, hello. I'm your new secretary, Bai Xiaoyu." She composed herself and spoke softly.
The governor nodded slowly, his gaze returning to the documents, his tone calm and even: "If there's nothing else, put the documents down and you can leave now."
Bai Xiaoyu responded without saying anything more, turned around and sat down at the secretary's desk next to the office. She seemed to be organizing documents, but her gaze secretly swept over the governor's back, and her fingers unconsciously clenched her sleeves. When the governor buried himself in the documents again, she slowly got up, walked quietly to his side, and took advantage of the gap when he was focused on turning the pages to quietly pull out a slingshot from her sleeve... She was just waiting for the right moment to get a little closer.
But at that critical moment, the governor's cell phone, which was on the corner of the table, suddenly started vibrating, and the piercing ringtone instantly broke the silence in the office.
The governor casually pressed the answer button. His previously tense brows relaxed little by little the moment he heard the voice on the other end of the phone, and even his tone softened, completely losing the sharpness of his previous voice: "It's Chaochao."
As he spoke, he got up and quickly walked to the French windows, his back to "Bai Xiaoyu." He even raised his hand and waved at her, his eyes conveying an unquestionable signal that she should leave immediately.
Bai Xiaoyu's heart sank, and she had to put away the thing in her hand. She had already realized that the governor was extremely vigilant, and with the phone next to him, there was no possibility that he would make a move again.
She suppressed the resentment in her eyes and left.
The governor held his phone, his tone gentle, a stark contrast to his earlier coldness towards "Bai Xiaoyu".
"Grandpa's birthday is coming up, and he wants to invite you and your mother to his birthday banquet."
For the Chief's birthday, Siqin originally wanted to throw a big banquet, but the Chief thought that it was just a birthday and there was no need to make a big fuss; a simple meal at home would be fine.
Chaochao on the other end of the phone happily agreed.
Hearing Chaochao's soft, childlike voice, the governor's eyes unconsciously lit up with a smile.
"Grandpa, can I bring my dad and sister on your birthday? We can have dinner together that day."
After thinking for a moment, Chaochao asked again.
The governor was even more delighted upon hearing this and readily agreed.
He didn't have many friends or relatives, and he felt more at ease with fewer people around. Afraid that Yan Lan would have to worry, he added, "Just come with your dad, mom, and sister. Tell your mom not to bring a gift that day, and just come early."
The best gift he could receive would be if Yan Lan were to come over.
After hanging up with Chaochao, the Chief put his phone back on the corner of the table and dialed the internal line to call Si Chu over.
When Si Chu pushed the door open and came in, he raised his chin and his tone returned to its usual calm: "The birthday party doesn't need to be big. Just hold it at home. Can you draft a guest list for me? They're all family members, so it doesn't need to be complicated."
Si Chu nodded in agreement, took out his notebook to take notes, and started thinking about his close relatives, but he didn't expect that the governor wouldn't mention Yan Lan's family.
He included Liu Jinnian and his wife, along with Yan Feng's family, all of whom were frequent visitors to the family. The number of people was small, which was in line with the etiquette of a family banquet.
The governor didn't refute, but simply gave a faint "hmm," glancing out the window without mentioning the extra invitation to Yan Lan and her son, as if he had deliberately left it unsaid and didn't intend for Si Chu to know in advance.
Si Chu didn't think much of it, and wrote down the names in his notebook. He then asked about the specific time of the family dinner. Little did he know that there would be several unmentioned guests on his prepared list...
At the entrance of St. Mary's Kindergarten, Chaochao's face lit up with a smile. He turned and tugged at Xiaoxi's clothes beside him, his voice crisp and clear.
"Sister, Grandpa Governor invited us over for birthday cake, let's bring Dad and Mom along!"
Xiaoxi smiled and nodded. The siblings held hands and skipped towards the door.
As soon as she entered the house, Chaochao rushed to Yan Lan's side and vividly recounted the invitation from the governor.
Yan Lan's smile faltered upon hearing this, followed by a hint of embarrassment. Uncle Tao's birthday was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but this little guy, Chaochao, was being too impulsive by bringing his whole family.
What troubled her even more was that she and Qin Shi had long been divorced. Now, with her child in tow, inviting Qin Shi to the governor's banquet would inevitably seem awkward and might even attract gossip.
She opened her mouth, intending to find a reason to refuse, but the words "prescription" suddenly popped into her mind. Thinking of the reclusive governor's wife, the thought of refusing was abruptly reversed.
Normally, the governor's wife rarely appears in public, and finding an opportunity to meet her is extremely difficult.
Yan Lan thought to herself that since the governor had taken the initiative to host a family banquet this time, she would definitely be able to meet the governor's wife.
For Chaochao's sake, and also to clarify the matter of the prescription and the questions that had been lingering in her heart for so long, she had to attend this banquet.
