Chapter 37 A Seed of Devotion
Chapter 37 A Seed of Devotion
The rain was still falling, pattering against the broken windows.
Looking out at the dark night sky, Li Wei suddenly felt a pang of sympathy for Harvey.
The coin in his hand was no longer used to decide other people's fates.
Instead, it was repeatedly cutting away at his remaining rationality; with each twist and turn, a portion of his rationality was lost.
Li Wei shook his head, pulling himself out of his thoughts and looking at Batman.
"He is punishing himself. Every time he lets someone go, it's a reminder to himself that he failed to carry out a just verdict."
After Li Wei finished speaking, he took out his phone and dialed Gordon's number. The call was quickly connected.
"Gordon, Ramirez is fine, but Xavi ran away."
You must protect your family; being targeted by him is never a good thing.
"Don't worry, I've already gone back to check on them, they're all fine..."
Gordon's answer made Levi's heart skip a beat, and he immediately became anxious.
"You mean you're not home right now?"
Gordon's voice came through the receiver, "When I got back, everyone was home."
I told Barbara to be careful, and then I rushed to the police station. There were more people who needed me...
Without listening to Gordon's further explanation, Levi hung up the phone immediately.
"Gotham will keep turning without anyone, does this guy really think he's some kind of savior?!"
Levi's angry appearance caught Batman's attention. He turned around and looked at Levi with surprise, as he didn't remember Levi ever being a hot-tempered brute.
"What's wrong, Mr. Li Wei?"
"That Gordon guy, we told him to go back and protect his family, and he actually went back to the police station!"
Li Wei slammed his fist on the table in anger, startling Ramirez, who was lying on the ground.
She could only endure the discomfort and dared not say a word.
Fortunately, Batman noticed her predicament and threw a batarang, freeing her.
—He only cut the ropes binding him; he did not harm Ramirez.
If Levi were in a good mood, he would definitely be full of praise for this scene, paving the way for Bruce Wayne's later demise.
However, Li Wei's brain was racing right now, and he had no time to pay attention to these things.
"Batman, we have to go!" Levi gestured for Batman to follow him and then went out the door first.
"Where are we going?" Batman asked, puzzled. He didn't know how Levi had managed to do it.
This guy is like a prophet; he always manages to find the right direction.
"Stop talking nonsense and follow me!"
The Batmobile roared as it sped toward 52nd Street—the place where Rachel had been imprisoned.
Batman drove intently, making no other noise, afraid of disturbing Li Wei.
Li Wei was sitting in the passenger seat, his eyes closed, deep in thought about where he had slipped up and given Harvey an opportunity.
However, a cell phone rang, quickly breaking the silence in the car.
Li Wei picked up his phone and saw that it was Gordon calling.
"My wife and children are missing!" Gordon's voice was filled with panic. "The nanny just said she received a call saying I had an accident at the textile factory on 52nd Street, and they're on their way!"
"Sheriff Gordon," Levi said indifferently into his phone, "we're on 52nd Street, almost at the textile factory."
If you are still willing to fulfill your duties as a husband and a father, I think you should come over as soon as possible.
After saying this, Li Wei hung up the phone without waiting for a reply.
"Batman, it's confirmed. Harvey is at the textile mill. He kidnapped Gordon's family."
Batman turned to look at Li Wei and found that although his tone was indifferent, his face was full of anger.
"I understand, but what's his reason for doing this?"
For some reason, Batman felt a chill run down his spine as he looked at the enraged Levi.
"The reason? You wouldn't want to know."
Harvey's target was never just those corrupt police officers; he wanted the final trial.
He was going to judge all those who "failed to protect Rachel," and Gordon happened to be the most crucial one on his list.
Glancing at Batman, Levi felt that Harvey was much more affectionate towards Rachel than this guy.
As expected, no matter where you are, a simp will never win House's heart.
Despite his curiosity, Batman wisely refrained from asking why when he saw Levi's dark expression.
The Batmobile sped along and soon arrived at the entrance of the textile factory.
As soon as the car came to a complete stop, Batman got out without hesitation.
Li Wei didn't rush to get out of the car. Instead, he opened his phone and looked at the photos he had received.
—A photo of Rachel in the intensive care unit, which he obtained through the connections of nurses he met during his hospital stay.
In the photo, Rachel's face still has bandages in some places, but she looks quite well, proving that she is still alive.
Li Wei took a deep breath, stuffed his phone into his pocket, and ran wildly toward the textile factory building.
...
The iron door leading to the basement was rusty, and when the two pushed it open, the iron hinges made a piercing "creak" sound, like a painful wail.
The air was filled with the smell of dust and explosive residue, the smell of the day Rachel had her accident, and even after so long, the smell hadn't completely dissipated.
"Wait, why did this guy choose this place?"
Batman finally realized, belatedly, that he had been to this place before.
He rescued Rachel from here not long ago.
After he finished speaking, he looked at Li Wei, hoping that the other party could answer his questions.
Ignoring Batman, Li Wei turned on his tactical flashlight, the beam sweeping across the empty basement.
The spent cartridges on the ground, the charred planks, the cracks in the wall... all of these were exactly the same as what he had seen in the files.
This also proves that, after so much time has passed, no one has actually come to the scene.
"I heard Rachel is Harvey's girlfriend. I guess he's doing this to get revenge for her?" Levi said, bending down to pick up a yellowed photograph from the ground. It was a picture of Harvey and Rachel together.
The two stood smiling broadly in front of the city hall, with a line written on their backs in charcoal: "Everyone who owes her must repay!"
"Oh, Harvey's really a lovestruck guy," Levi said, showing the photo to Batman.
Fearing he might not be able to see clearly, they even used a flashlight to illuminate the way for him.
Batman stared at the photo, veins bulging on his forehead, his fists clenched tightly.
"What does this have to do with me? I saved Rachel... This has nothing to do with me..."
He desperately wanted to snatch the photo and tear it to shreds, but reason prevented him from doing so.
Batman admits he loves Rachel, but Harvey's love for Rachel seems to be even deeper.
This discovery left him feeling very uneasy.
As the two continued walking, they heard hurried footsteps behind them.
"I have arrived."
Gordon's voice came from behind the two men, and with the constantly flickering beam of his flashlight, Gordon quickly appeared in front of them.
Gordon's current image is not good; in fact, one could say he looks rather unkempt.
His camel-colored overcoat was covered in rain and mud, and he gripped his pistol tightly, his knuckles turning slightly white.
Seeing Gordon's expression, Li Wei felt a little better; at least this guy still valued his family.
In China, with very few exceptions, even the worst person usually puts their family first.
"Where are my family members?"
Gordon looked at the two of them, his voice full of anxiety.
