Chapter 46 Looking for Water

Chapter 46 Looking for Water

Old Luo gave Su Yue a sharp rap on the head, but judging from her lively spirit, she was perfectly fine. He then ladled out the cooked porridge and handed it to Su Yue, who was rubbing her head.

"You old man, you're being unreasonable. You can just drink porridge, but how can you hit someone? Humph!" He complained while drinking his porridge.

"Old man, this porridge doesn't taste very good."

Old Luo rolled his eyes at Su Yue, "It wasn't even good, yet you drank it all."

A bowl of porridge wasn't enough to satisfy her hunger, so Su Yue started pretending to open the wooden box and rummaging through it.

"Oh dear! There's still a bag of dried meat here. It must be leftovers from before." Su Yue hugged the dried meat, looking guilty at Old Man Luo who was driving the mule cart, and deliberately spoke louder so that he could hear her.

Old Luo turned back in confusion and moved closer to Su Yue. Sure enough, there was a bag of dried meat. He thought that this little girl didn't seem like the kind of person who would keep leftover bread in a doghouse!

But he still reached out his hand. Su Yue looked at the outstretched hand and, considering how thoughtfully he had cooked the porridge, poured him half of it.

"Mmm, it smells delicious. It would be perfect if there was some wine to drink with it." Old Luo kept his eyes fixed on the wooden box.

Knowing he had this in mind, Su Yue pretended not to see it and turned her head to eat her jerky.

"You heartless brat."

As evening approached, the narrow road came to an end. An old man and a young man watched the exit ahead, where large groups of migrants were resting, their mouths watering.

"Wow, there are so many refugees! Is this a nationwide migration?" It's rare to see so many people fleeing famine together like this.

At the same time, not far away, an old woman slapped a younger woman across the face: "Eat, eat! How can you be so greedy? You barren hen! This is for my grandson! You'll choke to death, you little slut..."

The young woman who was being beaten didn't fight back. She just kept swallowing the egg in her mouth, afraid that if she didn't swallow it, her mother-in-law would take it out.

But it's all for her newborn baby girl! If she doesn't eat something nutritious to help with lactation, the baby might starve.

She was willing to do it even at the risk of being beaten to death by her mother-in-law, but seeing the man sitting next to her, watching her being beaten without any reaction, the young woman gave up.

"Second son, I don't care about your wife. If you keep this up, don't blame us for kicking you out." The speaker was the old woman's eldest son. The eggs his sister-in-law had stolen originally belonged to him. He then pulled the old woman to sit down beside him, pretending to be a good person: "Mother! Don't be angry. I already told my brother to keep an eye on his wife..."

There were many onlookers around; no matter the time, men and women just love gossip.

Then some people started talking quietly.

"Listen to that Zhao sister-in-law's husband, what a spineless coward. He doesn't even stand up for his wife and lets his mother beat and scold him. Why did his wife cheat on him? Wasn't it for his little daughter? Pshaw, what a useless piece of trash."

"That's right. Look at her little girl, she's hungry and her cries are barely louder than a cat's. I heard she's run out of breast milk these past few days. Her mother-in-law only cares about her eldest grandson."

……

Su Yue and Old Man Luo had already gotten off the cart and squatted down to listen to what others were saying while watching the family gossip.

That family brought a lot of things; how could they bear to let their granddaughter starve to death?

The young woman, holding her baby in her arms, hid behind a tree and began to breastfeed.

The people around them started eating their dry rations, and because of the commotion earlier, no one seemed to notice that there were two extra people.

With nothing exciting to see, the two returned to the cart. Old Luo looked at the empty bucket and sighed.

"Old man, where are you going?" Su Yue hadn't dared to take water out of her spatial storage these past few days because Old Luo was around. She only remembered when Old Luo picked up the water bucket.

"There's no water left. I'll go look for a water source nearby," Old Luo said, and then he turned to leave.

Su Yue snatched the bucket from Old Luo and told him to watch the mule cart while she went to find it herself.

There isn't even a ditch around here. Didn't you see that group of refugees going out with empty buckets and coming back with empty buckets?

If Su Yue could lift the hood off Old Luo's head, she would find that his lips were actually dry and chapped. Ever since he saw that there wasn't much water left yesterday, Old Luo hadn't been drinking much. He was saving it for Su Yue so that she could last for two more days. He never expected that she would vomit like that when they passed through the village.

Old Luo was really frightened. Even if he could cure diseases, he didn't have any medicine!

Su Yue looked around for any puddles or streams nearby, and planned to release some water from her spatial storage.

After searching around, they finally found a dried-up puddle. Seeing that no one was around, they started filling it with water.

After filling the buckets, Su Yue carried them back home, encountering several refugees on the way.

Seeing Su Yue carrying a full bucket of water, they wanted to snatch it from her. They had been without water for two days, and the sight of water almost made them desperate.

Su Yue shouted, "There's a puddle over there, and there's still water in it. Hurry up and fetch some!"

Many people heard his shout and rushed over like madmen.

Su Yue put quite a lot of water in the puddle, enough for each family to fill half a bucket.

Old Luo also heard Su Yue's shouts, and without even looking at the mule, he rushed towards where Su Yue was.

Seeing the girl carrying a full bucket of water back so easily, I couldn't help but marvel at her good luck.

When we returned to the cart, we saw many refugees carrying water back, some of whom had even lit fires to steam their rations.

Having more people has its advantages. Look at those who fled the famine alone, barely surviving on their last breath, almost starving to death. And look at this group of people, they still have food to eat.

The atmosphere in the crowd immediately became lively, and soon the aroma of food wafted through the air.

While everyone else was cooking, Old Man Luo also started a fire to make pancakes for Su Yue.

During this time, he was the one who got to eat for free. Despite his usual bickering with the little girl, she never seemed to mind, which made Old Man Luo extremely grateful.

If I hadn't met Mao Yatou, I might have ended up eating dirt like those other refugees.

He secretly kept a hundred-tael silver note in his pocket, intending to give it to the little girl later as her food expenses for the time being.

"Give!"

Su Yue saw Old Luo rummaging in his pocket and then pull out an oil paper package and hand it to her.

This old man hasn't bathed in days. He's been carrying this thing in his arms for so long, it must smell awful. When I met him, he was dressed in tattered clothes. If I hadn't seen that he could fly, I wouldn't have bothered with him.

"Take it, consider it as food expenses for the next few days." Old Luo saw the look of disgust on Su Yue's face.

"What good stuff?" Su Yue became interested when she heard it was for food expenses. She stopped eating the freshly baked pancake in her hand, took it, opened it, and saw that it was just a silver note. She thought it was something valuable.

Oh well, might as well take it. I'll just put it in my little handbag and go eat my pancakes.

These pancakes taste best when they're fresh out of the pan; they get hard and not as good when they cool down.

Old Luo didn't know if Su Yue was naive or had seen too much of the world, but her nonchalant attitude made him feel like he had wasted his time being so protective of her.
