Chapter 29 Pedestrians
Chapter 29 Pedestrians
They continued on their journey until dark before stopping. Before the grandmother and grandson caught up, Su Yue started a fire and cooked a meal.
As I finished the last sip of chicken soup, I heard the sound of a cart being pushed from afar.
Under the lantern light from the mule cart, the weary figures of the grandfather and grandson could be seen.
Su Yue had Huang Mao and the mule lie down together on the cart and listen to the grandfather and grandson talking.
"Grandpa, please sit down and rest. I'll lay out a mat for you." Little Yuan'er would be carried onto the wheelbarrow by her grandfather after walking around for a while in the afternoon. Seeing the old man wiping away sweat from exhaustion, she wanted him to sit down and rest as soon as possible.
"Hey, hey, Grandpa, sit down. Yuan'er is so sensible." The old man was pulled to sit under the tree by his little grandson, watching his little grandson's busy figure.
"Grandpa, have some flatbread." After laying out the mat, Xiao Yuan'er took out two dry flatbreads from the basket on the wheelbarrow.
Su Yue looked up from the cart at the pancakes the two people were eating.
The old man broke off a small piece of cake and put it in his mouth, chewing it slowly.
The child named Xiao Yuan'er broke off half a cake, put one piece in his bosom, and put the other half to his mouth to bite.
The pancake looked very rough, and the child, after chewing for a long time, choked and stretched his neck.
Seeing this, the old man hurriedly fed his grandson water from the water bottle on the wheelbarrow. After seeing that the grandson had swallowed the water, he patted him on the back before sitting back down with a relieved look and continuing to eat the biscuit in his hand.
Su Yue was afraid the child would choke to death, so she watched for a while longer before blowing out the oil lamp on the mule cart.
After laying down the tarpaulin covering the cart, I used my consciousness to enter the space.
The mature grains and vegetables are stored in the bamboo house warehouse.
Looking at the mountain of grain piled up in the bamboo warehouse, Su Yue felt a strong sense of security.
The soybeans that had been planted had all matured, and Su Yue still regretted not having a stone mill.
But that couldn't stop me from wanting to eat soybeans.
You can't drink soy milk, but you can eat roasted soybeans!
Soon a big pot of fragrant stir-fried soybeans was ready.
Then, using his consciousness, he picked the ripe peaches and apples in the space and stored them in the bamboo house warehouse.
Using his mental power, he processed the apples, peaches, and wine collected from the Qian family, producing several jars of fruit wine.
After all that fuss, when I came to my senses, the grandfather and grandson were already asleep not far away.
The blond-haired dog lying next to the mule was even snoring softly.
Su Yue leaned against the car wall, pretending to sleep. The moonlight was like water, and the starlight was dazzling. Tomorrow would be another sunny day.
The next morning, when the first rays of sunlight shone on Su Yue's face, she woke up and looked up at the distance.
The old man and the child had already woken up and were tidying up their things.
"Good morning, sister." Little Yuan'er saw Su Yue lift the oilcloth and ran over to greet her with a smile.
Su Yue was surprised that the child had learned to please her in just one night.
"Well, good morning."
The old man, who was not far away, watched his grandson go by with some worry. He was relieved to see that Su Yue was not unhappy and continued with his work.
It wasn't that he was afraid of a little girl. In this year of famine, anyone walking alone was no ordinary person, let alone one accompanied by a wolf.
Even if she were a young girl, the grandfather and granddaughter wouldn't want to mess with her; it was already quite good that she could follow behind.
At least they're better than those heartless people in their own village. Their son lost his life leading villagers out to buy grain for those fleeing famine, and those villagers actually ran away in the middle of the night, afraid that the grandfather and grandson would come to their door demanding compensation.
"Sister, my name is Xiao Yuan'er," Xiao Yuan'er squatted not far from the cart, watching Su Yue stretch her muscles.
"Oh," Su Yue replied perfunctorily, stretching out her arm.
"Sister, what are you doing?" Little Yuan'er seemed not to understand Su Yue's perfunctory answer and continued to ask.
"Kid, your grandpa is leaving, hurry back." Su Yue didn't want to pay any more attention to the child; it would only cause trouble on this journey of fleeing famine.
Talking too much will create feelings. This mountain road will eventually come to an end. Who knows what will happen after we get out? If I encounter danger alone, I can hide in my space.
I wouldn't risk bringing people into my space; if I were to bring anyone, it would only be a mute, dead person.
As soon as Xiao Yuan'er left, Su Yue tied up the mule cart, got in, and drove off.
Su Yue, who was riding in a mule cart, knew that she had reached a village and that this sparsely populated mountain road would soon come to an end. She had no idea what kind of people and things she would encounter next.
After walking leisurely for more than two hours, we rounded a bend and emerged from the mountain road onto a main road with more people.
Su Yue led the mule and the yellow-haired man into the bushes and put them directly into her spatial storage.
He went into his space again and changed into a set of old, tattered clothes. He tied his hair high on his head. Maybe he didn't eat well before and didn't develop well. This made him look like a tomboy.
After eating and drinking well in the space, they filled their baskets with some light items to conceal themselves, covered the baskets with a cloth to hide themselves, and carried the large iron spoon in a bundle before leaving the space.
Su Yue carried her basket and slowly walked out of the mountain. She walked along the path and soon saw many pedestrians in tattered clothes.
They were all groups of refugees, in large numbers, rarely alone.
Some families, pulling carts, weren't curious when they saw someone coming out of the path; they just kept walking and focused on their own path.
I've been lying on the cart for the past two days, and the jolting is making my bones feel like they're about to fall apart.
Walking behind the crowd like this allows you to catch glimpses of the excitement every now and then.
Sure enough, the crowd started arguing again.
It's either that her child drank an extra sip of water, or that someone's daughter-in-law was scolded by her mother-in-law.
Su Yue had heard it several times along this stretch of road. In addition, she had been drinking the spiritual spring water in the space, so her hearing and vision were already very sensitive, and she was always able to get the first scoop.
Su Yue was engrossed in watching the commotion ahead, so much so that she didn't even notice someone brushing against her.
By the time they found out, he was already sandwiched between two women, one on each side.
"What are you two aunties doing?" Su Yue picked up the large iron ladle she was carrying and played with it.
"I'm not doing anything, I'm just curious why you came out alone. There are so many refugees on this road, how can your family not worry about you? You're so carefree." Aunt Zuo waved her hand after saying that.
The one on the right chimed in, "That's right, your parents are really carefree. It's so dangerous for a young girl like you. Look, the family pulling the cart ahead is ours. If you don't mind, you can come with us. It'll be good to have someone to look after you on the way."
These two aunties have really sharp eyes; even in her condition, they could still recognize her as a girl.
“Yes, yes, we’re not bad people. The one pulling the cart over there is my husband’s surname, Wei. You can call me Auntie, or call her Aunt Lin.” Aunt Wei on the left pointed to the family pulling the cart in front.
Su Yue was speechless after being teased by the two of them. Now that it seemed they didn't have any bad intentions, she felt relieved.
"Hello, Aunt Wei and Aunt Lin." Su Yue smiled awkwardly.
These two seemed oblivious to awkwardness, or perhaps they were newcomers on their journey of fleeing famine and wanted to inquire about other things from Su Yue.
"Girl! Where did you come from?" Aunt Wei asked warmly.
“Anyang Town.” Su Yue didn’t answer truthfully, only mentioning the previous town.
“Then you left earlier than us. We only started escaping the night before last,” Aunt Wei said as they walked.
