Chapter 131: To Second Chances
Chapter 131: To Second Chances
Rachel had mopped up the urine and cleaned the room, she did so wearing nothing but some dirty clothes provided by Josephine.
Josephine’s first impression was wrong, Rachel meant business and she planned on making herself useful no matter how dirty the job was.
A man walked into the room unannounced and Josephine immediately stood at attention.
He took a step into the room and paused before inspecting what happened there.
He hadn’t seen Rachel before so she had to be a new face as there was no way someone as attractive as her would go unnoticed.
But more so, he couldn’t believe how spotless the room had become, this was something that hadn’t happened in quite some time but his attention returned to Josephine.
"Doctor Charlie! I didn’t know we were expecting you today." Josephine’s tone changed immediately.
Doctor Charlie was a man in his mid-thirties, he had a bald spot on the top of his head but even with that, he refused to go bald.
He wore medicated glasses because, without them, his sight was all but nonexistent.
He had on a white scrub and this was why it was easy to identify he was a doctor for Rachel.
This was her first time seeing any doctors since the apocalypse began but she knew that this was an opportunity for Jason and Bella to get proper treatment.
Rachel knew she had to get on their good side but there was clearly friction here.
Rachel noticed that the doctor wasn’t pleased with what he saw and something told her she just did what Josephine was meant to do.
"We have got the necessary medicine to treat Mr. Gabriel... There is no reason to delay any further," Charlie said as he continued his walk to the man’s bedside.
Mr. Grabriel was in so much pain and it was a miracle that he held on for as long as he did.
Most people thought he would die and Rachel understood at that moment why what Jason did was such a big deal.
He just saved the husband of the woman who led the community, was he the leader and fell then his wife took over? Or has his wife always been the one who led the community?
Rachel found herself interested in the history of this place but that was only normal seeing as it was her new home.
The doctor began to check Mr. Gabriel and he seemed to be satisfied by the result of this brief test even though the drugs obtained were yet to be administered.
Josephine gestured for Rachel to leave because she was stinking up the place and the doctor needed to concentrate.
Rachel did just that and walked outside, before she could turn around to give what was going on a second look, the door slammed shut.
"Who would have thought I would ever do something so disgusting?" Rachel thought; the stench was worse now than when she was inside.
"I hope all this pays off..." Rachel thought with an exhausted sigh, she just wanted to take a shower at this point.
"Are there even any showers here?" Rachel involuntarily muttered to herself.
"I see you have met Josephine..." A voice said behind her, prompting Rachel to jump forward and cock her head in that direction to see who it was that spoke.
The man before her was as tall as Jason, if not taller but that wasn’t the most distinctive aspect of his looks.
The man had almond eyes with a sharp jawline, she had no idea if someone so beautiful could exist but if someone told her that this man was a Greek god that had just descended from Mount Olympus, she would believe.
He had on blue scrubs, this felt like an actual hospital but it wasn’t as it lacked certain qualities and tools present in an actual hospital.
"Don’t you know it’s rude to sneak up on people?" Rachel barked, she wasn’t going to let him have his way just because he was good-looking.
The blonde pale-skinned man simply smiled the moment she said this.
"I would be lying if I said that wasn’t my intention." The man said with a drop-dead gorgeous smile.
Rachel didn’t know why but she didn’t feel offended by this; this could be linked to the study that showed attractive people are more likely to get away with certain actions that are otherwise deemed as harassment or something of the like.
This was a prime example of that even though this scenario was a subjective one and because of that, the narrative could easily change.
"You do know first impressions are important, right?" Rachel said, rolling her eyes in annoyance.
"Who would you remember when you get home? The guy that said hi or the guy that made your heart skip a beat?" The man said and Rachel couldn’t believe the audacity he had.
"You’re going to be a piece of work," Rachel was already exhausted thinking about her future interaction with this man.
"Speaking of work, I should probably head inside to assist Doctor Charlie. He might be lenient but he will give it to me if I’m late. How about we continue this conversation over dinner?" The man suggested. He was direct with his approach and knew what he wanted, and that was Rachel.
Rachel knew this but she was on the fence, she had no interest in him but she also knew that he might hold authority over Josephine and might be her way to manipulate him into getting access to medicine in the future.
"In your dreams," Rachel responded, she knew she couldn’t make it too easy as men relished the banter.
"I guess I will be looking forward to sleeping tonight, hopefully with you by my side," There was no doubt that this man had a smooth tongue, he weaved compelling words so effortlessly and even Rachel couldn’t help but crack a faint smile.
The man walked into the room and she could see Josphine lowering her head in respect and this confirmed her suspicion that he outranked her in this community.
Rachel sighed and wondered why Jason couldn’t be this direct with her.
She wasn’t sure he liked her and she knew she couldn’t wait around forever.
Maybe going out with someone new might help her take her mind off Jason or knock some sense into her.
Rachel needed to shower and she couldn’t walk down the street like this or people would look at her funny.
She had to clean up and luckily, she found a shower to do just that.
Rachel found a shower and luckily, it was separated by gender so she felt safe.
Rachel knew all this could be over in the blink of an eye but she wasn’t going to let herself dwell on this.
Right now, they were safe and that was all that mattered, her sister was safe.
Rachel ran the hot water on her skin, it warmed her chilled body and she could sleep there forever but the flashback she had that moment was of Jason.

Lillian and Carl’s conversation was the definition of awkward, Bella couldn’t stand it.
It was painfully dry but Carl got his message across.
For some reason, something told Bella that these two people would remember this conversation a lot more fondly than her.
Bella watched Carl leave the moment the rain stopped and the relief that came across Lillian’s face.
"He wasn’t that bad, was he?" Bella asked and Lillian shook her head.
"He wasn’t, I’m like that around new people," Lillian responded with a reassuring smile.
Bella knew Lillian long enough to know that these things were things she didn’t like talking about,
She didn’t want to make her uncomfortable as she already caused enough trouble but this was where the conversation came to an end.
"Hey, are you hungry?" Bella asked to which Lillian nodded to confirm she was hungry.
"Let me whip up something quick, I’m glad that they gave up a few potatoes when we moved in," Bella said.
For some reason, she felt overwhelming peace in her heart, it wasn’t chaotic.
This was a sort of peach she never had, even before the world fell.
"Hey Bella..." Lillian called, prompting the lady to stop in her tracks.
"I see how hard you’re trying to make amends but I just want you to know, I have forgiven you for any part you played in that. If Jason believed you could be redeemed then I believe in his judgment... My sister’s a bit of a hardball though but keep doing what you’re doing and you should be fine," Lillian said and Bella’s heart stopped for a moment.
She couldn’t believe what she was hearing but it brought a heartwarming smile on her face.
These words meant a lot more to her than she realized and she walked to the kitchen to complete her task.
This brought an end to the chaotic day that was filled with events.
