Chapter 97: The Conclusion PT.2
Chapter 97: The Conclusion PT.2
The toughest part was over and they were only alive because of the man who led these people.
There was nothing that could be done considering that Lorenzo had been killed by foreign parties and the people that supported his cause had to accept it.
They were left to deal with the zombies but Bella and co were allowed to go.
The worst was over and what happened in the camp after that was left up to the gods.
Their leader was a strange man but for him to be scared of this boogeyman, he must be something that they had to worry about in the future.
Sam drove the car and he zoomed off the moment Rachel and co were in sight.
"WE FUCKING DID IT!" Jason exclaimed, every fibre in his body rioting in pain.
He couldn’t believe that they had managed to get out of this.
Bella was being treated by Clementine in the backseat, she couldn’t help but think that her life was in danger thanks to Sam being present.
Sam didn’t say a word and the newest addition to their crew, Allison, remained quiet.
Why she saw it fit to leave was entirely up to her but it wouldn’t be seen as a betrayal due to the circumstance in which he left.
Everyone knew that it was Cindy keeping her there and the moment Cindy died, she was free to do as she pleased, this was one of the privileges the Specters enjoyed.
Rachel was suspicious of her, who could blame her considering what Bella had put them through but she was happy that they were on their way back to her sister.
Rachel was reckless as she couldn’t her thoughts to wander and it was only Lillian on her mind.
"You left someone behind, didn’t you?" Allison asked her, this was their first conversation.
Sam did this intentionally to show Clementine that if she continued to do as she pleased, he too would do the same. Sam made pitstops to take his duffel bags of guns.
Clementine couldn’t complain because she had gone back for Bella and Sam did this as a retort to get under her skin and it was working.
"Yeah, my little sister," Rachel responded she needed some positive reinforcement.
"How old is she?" Allison asked; the conversation was going a lot better than anticipated.
"She’s 16," Rachel responded once again.
"I had a sister once..." Allison said; this was regarding the topic of siblings.
"I thought she would be safe in my arms until the zombies ripped her right out," The moment Allison said this, a chuckle could be heard leaving Sam’s mouth, he wasn’t even trying to be subtle.
"You’re so small, it’s no wonder they had such an easy time," Sam said and everywhere went silent.
This was quite the insensitive thing to say but to a neutral party, it could qualify as dark humour.
Bella was sleeping on Clementine’s lap but even Sam’s partner didn’t find this funny.
"No one is safe, not even your sister," Allison said, unfazed by Sam’s retort.
"Burn!" Sam exclaimed, genuinely finding this funny as he decided to follow Clementine’s lead.
"Lillian isn’t like any other kid, she is strong," Rachel said with a reassuring smile.
"I hope so for your sake..." Allison said.
"I know so, she is stronger than all of us here," Rachel said and there was this certainty in her voice that made these words look like facts.
No one knew anything about Rachel or her sister, and neither did they know about how Lillian got her scars.
-
The busy kid calling her mama, Lillian thought about abandoning him and saving herself because she didn’t just have to protect her life but that of a baby as well.
One thing that the world had thought was people weren’t to be trusted.
They each had an ulterior motive, there was no such thing as selflessness in the heart of man.
But she couldn’t bring herself to abandon the boy because it wasn’t his fault.
Lillian had to think, she wasn’t going to kill people she didn’t have to or she would be no different from the monsters she condemned.
She hated them, she hated people but there are people her spirit accepts without any convincing.
She took a deep breath and allowed herself to think, she could hear the footsteps approaching rapidly but this didn’t mean anything.
The door slowly opened and a man walked in, he was holding a baseball bat but that bat seemed to lower the moment he saw that there was a boy and a toddler seated.
"What the hell? How did you guys get here?" He asked, Lillian was nowhere to be seen and that was because she was hidden behind the door.
The clicking sound of a gun was heard, the man turned around to see Lillian pointing a pistol right at his back.
"Get on your knees... If you make a sound, I will blow your head off," Lillian threatened.
She was also a kid, the man was beginning to wonder how it was that they made it this far and judging from the food around, it was like they weren’t alone.
The man complied and got on his knees with his hands up.
"Look, I don’t want any trouble," He said but Lillian wasn’t buying any of it.
"Why did you have to come here!?" Lillian asked him, none of this would be happening if they just minded their business and moved on.
"We heard a voice, we would want to check it out for more survivors," The man said, he was eighteen years old so he was technically a man seeing as he was an adult.
"You’re lying," Lillian responded.
"Look kid, I get that you’re scared but don’t you think we have bigger things to worry about? You can only protect your siblings for so long but I have great news..." The man said.
"I can protect them just fine, I have done just fine on my own for the past few days," Lillian said; this was to give the illusion that they were alone as she didn’t know how he would react if he found out that there were others.
"Few days? The apocalypse has been on for weeks... You’re from Albany?" The man asked, this was one of the cities that felt the effects of the apocalypse a little later.
"How did you know?" Lillian asked but despite having this conversation with the man, her fingers were always on the trigger.
She was ready to pull it at the slightest movement from the man, she knew she would regret taking a life but at least she would be alive to do so.
"Because we have people from your city in our camp," The man responded.
"Camp?" Lillian asked, she had heard the adults talking about a camp before but she was also aware that they had gone to a camp to save Jason.
Were these people from that camp? If they were, she had to choose her words carefully as they were enemies but she was outnumbered so killing one wouldn’t be enough.
She had to use her brain and she did just that.
"That’s right, you and your siblings will be safe. You have nothing to worry about anymore," The man reassured her.
Lillian knew better than to drop her guard but if they wanted the illusion of a helpless kid, she was ready to portray just that so he would drop his guard.
Lillian was glad that Sam had taken the guns or this would have given them away.
There is no way a kid could carry a bag with that many guns alone.
Before the conservation could proceed further, another man entered the room but he had no gun with him.
"What is happening here, Jack!?" The man asked his friend on his knees, Lillian was agitated because she realized that she might be in danger.
"Did you go around fucking scaring the kids again!? I always told you your face did not look friendly!" The man barked, this wasn’t the reaction that Lillian was expecting.
She expected the man to treat her as a threat but he was treating her as a victim.
They understood her situation and they didn’t want to make the situation any worse than it needed to be.
"Shut up and watch your language, we’re around kids you, Carl," Jack responded.
They knew Lillian had a gun at his head but they weren’t treating it as an urgent situation.
They knew she would only pull the trigger if she felt threatened and rightfully so.
She needed to learn how to defend herself and this was the best way she knew how to.
"Hey kid, we don’t want any trouble and if you want to be left alone, we can do just that," Carl said and Jack sighed the moment he heard this.
He got up to his feet despite Lillian’s gun pointed right at him, he couldn’t believe the situation he found himself in.
"We will leave, it is clear you don’t need our help," Jack said with a defeated groan as he headed towards the door alongside his friend.
"T-They left?" Lillian muttered to herself, she was surprised that they didn’t try to take the others hostage to negotiate as she expected.
"Not entirely," A voice said from the toilet and what followed soon after was a scream.
