Chapter 11 Mission
Chapter 11 Mission
"You must be the distinguished guests from the Cloud Burial Sect. The City Lord has been waiting for you for quite some time," the attendant said respectfully.
Tang Gu looked at Jing Shu, about to say something. Jing Shu shook his head, and Tang Gu understood.
"Okay, trouble."
After the sun sets, the shops light up, and pedestrians come and go, creating a lively scene.
"With something like this happening in the city, aren't they afraid to be out so late?" Liu Yao asked Liu Hao in a low voice.
Liu Hao shook his head. "I don't know. We'll find out when we get to the City Lord's Mansion."
"Hey, where's Uncle Jing?" Yu Fan had just finished buying a string of candied hawthorns when he turned around and found that Jing Shu was gone.
"Uncle Jing said he has something to do and will meet us later." Tang Gu said helplessly, "Junior Brother Yu, don't eat anymore, I'm afraid you'll throw up later."
"what?"
As soon as Jing Shu entered the city gate, he sensed an unusual fluctuation of spiritual energy—very faint, yet bright red.
So he whispered a few words to Tang Gu and then began to track the fluctuations.
However, as more and more people gathered around, Jing Shu lost track of them...
whispering sound.
Jing Shu wasn't worried that someone had deliberately released it. He was the only one in both worlds who could see the spiritual energy fluctuations.
But aren't all spiritual energy fluctuations white? How can there be red?
Jing Shu was about to turn back to find Yu Fan and the others when a voice called out "Senior Brother!" stopped him. Immediately afterward, a small pink bundle of joy jumped into his arms.
"Senior brother, are you here to play with Meng'er?" Gu Meng's eyes gleamed, and it seemed as if a large tail was wagging behind him.
Jing Shu pinched Gu Meng's chubby little face. "No."
"Oh." The tail drooped down.
"So this is where your mission is." Shi Chuan raised an eyebrow, indicating that this place was not very safe.
"Well, I should go back now. Meng'er should listen to her senior brother." Jing Shu patted Gu Meng's head.
"Ah~ Senior Brother, take me to see the flower field tomorrow. Can't you come along?" Gu Meng was out for the first time after all. She hadn't seen Jing Shu for a day, and now that she saw him, she was especially clingy.
"Senior brother has a mission to complete. He'll play with Meng'er after that. Don't run around. Listen to your senior brother."
"Alright," Gu Meng said regretfully, "Then good luck, senior brother."
"Meng'er, where can I buy sugar figurines? Your senior brother will take you to buy some!" Shi Chuan changed the subject.
"Sugar figurine! Let's go! Senior Brother, hurry up!" Gu Meng instantly perked up and pulled Shi Chuan towards the sugar figurine stall.
"You heartless bastard." Jing Shu was quite helpless, but he turned and walked towards the city lord's mansion.
When Jing Shu found the group using the mission jade slip, Yu Fan was vomiting up all the candied hawthorns he had just eaten, and Liu Yao was pale and also dry heaving.
"I've only been gone a short while, and you two are already pregnant?" Jing Shu teased.
Liu Yao and Yu Fan glanced at Jing Shu and exclaimed, "Ugh!"
"..." No, is he really that disgusting?
"Uncle Jing, stop teasing them." Tang Gu stepped forward and explained, "The situation is not optimistic. We thought this mission was just a murder case, but judging from the body, it's probably not that simple."
Jing Shu immediately became serious. "Take me to see this."
Liu Hao stayed behind to take care of Yu Fan and Liu Yao, while Tang Gu took Jing Shu to the morgue.
Jing Shu pulled back the white sheet, and the stench of the corpse hit him. Even though Jing Shu had prepared himself mentally, he was still disgusted.
The corpse had been sucked dry by something, its face contorted in terror, its eyes bulging as if about to pop out of their sockets.
“Including last night, five have died now, all drained of their life essence.” Tang Gu’s expression was grave. “To avoid causing panic, the city lord blocked the news and didn’t alert them. This method of killing must be the work of an evil cultivator.”
"Where is the person who died yesterday?" Jing Shu covered the body with the white cloth again.
"That's the one at the very back."
Jing Shu strode over and pulled back the white sheet. A faint, crimson spiritual energy swirled around the deceased's heart, almost as if it were about to dissipate.
really……
"What's wrong?" Tang Gu asked, noticing Jing Shu's motionless posture. "Did you discover something?"
"No." Jing Shu put down the white cloth in his hand. "Did the deceased have anything in common?"
"According to the information investigated by the City Lord's Mansion, the five people had no contact with each other, and their identities were different. The only thing they had in common was that they were all married and their husbands had a good relationship."
Was this a random killing? Jing Shu pondered, "Let's go out and investigate again tomorrow, and figure out the motive for the killing first."
Tang Gu was slightly taken aback. Looking at Jing Shu, who was only a little over ten years old, he couldn't help but ask, "Uncle Jing, aren't you afraid?"
After all, the other two were vomiting so badly, and although Liu Hao didn't vomit, his complexion was really not good. On the other hand, Jing Shu, apart from frowning slightly at the beginning because of the fumes, didn't even blink twice.
"Huh?" Jing Shu then realized that he was still a child.
"I'm scared, haven't you noticed I've become less talkative?" Jing Shu blinked, as if trying to prove how innocent he was.
"..."
The two walked back together.
"What is heretical cultivation?" Jing Shu asked.
“Those who cultivate by killing people and sucking their life essence are collectively called evil cultivators. They are not necessarily human; they could also be demons,” Tang Gu explained.
Jing Shu nodded. After the founding of the nation, it was forbidden for beings to become spirits, let alone for people to kill or commit arson. Since arriving here, he had basically never left the sect, so it was no wonder he had never seen one.
"It's getting late, Uncle Jing, you should rest first. We can continue the investigation tomorrow."
After taking Jing Shu to his residence, Tang Gu left.
Jing Shu discovered that his nascent soul was still asleep, so he had no choice but to withdraw first.
This heretical cultivator who suddenly appeared is of unknown cultivation level, and as Tang Gu said, the situation is not optimistic. But this task was given to him by his master, so he should be able to handle it.
Jing Shu lay in bed, feeling a little uncomfortable with no one to share a bed with.
Jing Shu chuckled softly, not understanding why he thought that way.
After sending Shi Chuan a message saying "Beware of evil cultivators," he fell asleep. (Note: He had a communication jade slip.)
